The Kindness of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Land the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Because my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a big 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I should apply for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
